Custom Note — Named Range (Desktop) ​

What it is: A technique that assigns a label (named range) to a cell in a custom note — typically the note number — so it can be referenced automatically on other pages in the Annual Financial Statements, ensuring the correct note number always appears wherever it is cited.

What it's for ​

When you add a custom note to the Annual Financial Statements, the note gets a number. That number needs to appear on the Statement of Financial Position or the Statement of Comprehensive Income next to the relevant line item. If the note number changes (because notes are reordered), you want the reference on the main statements to update automatically rather than requiring manual corrections. A named range creates that link.

How to do it ​

Creating a named range for a custom note number (DX133) ​

  1. Select the cell that contains the note number for your custom note.
  2. Go to Developer and select Create Named Range.
  3. Enter a descriptive name for the named range (e.g. CustomNote1) and click OK.
  4. Once created, clicking on that cell will show the named range in the top-left cell reference box — you can copy this name.

Referencing the custom note number on another sheet ​

  1. Find an existing note number on the sheet where you want your custom note to appear (e.g. on the SoFP).
  2. Copy the formula in that existing note number cell and paste it where your custom note number should appear.
  3. Open the pasted formula and replace the named range in it with the named range you created for your custom note.
  4. The custom note number will now display correctly and will update automatically if the note order changes.
  5. You can also reference the note number in a sentence (e.g. "See note X for details") by including the named range in the text formula.
